V.U.M - The bilateral ties have made many outstanding achievements, reflecting the success of the governments’ strategy of forgetting the past, overcoming differences, promoting common points, and moving toward the future in an equal, honest, and mutually beneficial manner

Ho Chi Minh City Party chief Nguyen Van Nen (R) meets U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper in the city, April 11, 2023.

On November 4, Politburo member and Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Van Nen received US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc E Knapper, on the occasion of visiting and working in Ho Chi Minh City.

Speaking at the reception, Ho Chi Minh City Party chief Nen said that 2023 marks an important milestone for the two countries’ ties, with the highlights of the 10th anniversary of their comprehensive partnership, the 30-year anniversary of the Fulbright Vietnamese Student Scholarship Program, and the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention office in Vietnam.

“The bilateral ties have made many outstanding achievements, reflecting the success of the governments’ strategy of forgetting the past, overcoming differences, promoting common points, and moving toward the future in an equal, honest, and mutually beneficial manner,” Nen said.

Speaking of the cooperation between the city and the United States, he said that the city acts as Vietnam’s major market and economic hub, and boasts much potential for U.S. enterprises to invest in various fields, namely hi-tech, smart cities, digital economy, healthcare, and finance.

The city is willing to welcome high-ranking delegations from the United States and investors who desire to sound out investment opportunities in Ho Chi Minh City.

In addition, the city expects to strengthen the partnership with the United States in two fields, including education and climate change response.

Ho Chi Minh City will host the fourth Economic Forum, centered around 'Green Growth: Journey toward Net-Zero Carbon Emissions' in September.

Through the event, the city will present its plan in detail and pool proposals and suggestions from experts to back its green growth strategy.

Echoing the view of the two nations’ relationship, Ambassador Knapper said that numerous activities implemented by the two sides demonstrated the United States’ support for Vietnam.

The two countries are moving toward the green growth and energy transition.

The diplomat said that the United States took into account its support for Ho Chi Minh City’s hi-tech and service development.

The U.S. ambassador expected both sides to quickly upgrade their ties, emphasizing that the United States hopes to greet Vietnam’s Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong as soon as possible.

On March 29, Vietnamese Party chief Trong spoke on the phone with U.S. President Joe Biden. The two reaffirmed the significance of the bilateral ties.

A week before the phone talk, a delegation of the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council (USABC), with the participation of over 50 enterprises, visited Vietnam to seek investment opportunities.
